Choosing the right sauna bench comes down to the wood it is made of and its size. The right size depends on how the sauna is used, because a sauna for rituals needs an upper bench to lie on, while a sauna used mainly for sitting needs enough bench levels for the group.

What is the best wood for sauna benches?

The best woods for sauna benches are linden, black alder and aspen, because their boards stay pleasant to touch against bare skin even in the heat. Pine and spruce are not used for benches, as their wood releases resin. Oak and other dense woods are also unsuitable, because they heat up enough to burn the skin.

What size should a sauna bench be?

A sauna bench is sized to the people who use it, with its length matched to their height, its width to their build and its height to the sauna master working beside it.

How high should a sauna bench be?

A sauna bench should be high enough that a sauna master can reach the person lying on it without bending down or reaching up. The sauna master works in full heat throughout the ritual, so a bench at the right height makes the work much easier.

How wide should a sauna bench be?

A sauna bench should be wide enough for people of different builds to lie on it with both arms resting freely along their sides. At that width, the sauna master can also reach every side of the body when applying a scrub or honey.

How long should a sauna bench be?

A sauna bench should be long enough for an adult to lie down at full length with straight legs, so it is best measured against the tallest person who regularly uses the sauna.

How many bench levels does a sauna need?

A sauna used mainly for sitting can have 2 or 3 bench levels, with three levels for larger groups and two for smaller ones.

How much space should there be above the top bench?

An adult sitting on the top bench should have at least a hand span (about 20 cm) of free space between their head and the ceiling. A much higher ceiling is not recommended either, because the hot air would then collect well above the heads of the people on the benches.

What is a low movable sauna bench for?

A low movable sauna bench is useful to a shorter sauna master during a ritual. The rest of the time it serves as the lowest bench, for example for children or as a footrest for people sitting in the heat.

What are the benefits of a freestanding low bench?

A freestanding low bench can be pushed further under the upper bench during a ritual whenever needed. After the ritual it can be moved elsewhere, which makes cleaning much easier and keeps the floor under the benches clean as well.
